North Carolina Swamp 1

Description

I had a little trip from Alexandria, On Canada to Alligator Alley in Florida and many stops on the way. Here are some pics. This is a swamp in North Carolina while searching for alligators. I checked every stream, river and swamp I could find for these not-as-abundant-as-I-thought animals. Gators are not everywhere in the southern states. I walked up to the water everywhere I went, splashed a bit and tried to lure the gators to me. I figured that I would look like an enticing meal to them and they may try to attack. I wanted to get them on the land so I could get close up pictures.

Where I saw the alligator was when I was a kid, and my dad was in the Marine Corps.

FYI, the Marine Corps bases are good places to observe wildlife because they have large expanses of land that is mostly untouched.  And, they let scientists on them to study the flor and the fauna.  But, most people can't get access to an actual military base.

Anyways, when we saw it, it was in some sort of water treatment place.   My dad heard about it from another marine and my family and my dad's friend were having a picnic and fishing.

My dad and his friend were probably still young at the time, because they did crazy things like jump into the pitlike place where the alligator was sun bathing, and kept throwing hot dogs at its face to get it to react.

It just sat there and let them hit him in the face.  I think that they're lucky that thing didn't bolt after them.  But, they didn't get anywhere close to where the gator would be able to do that.

But, it was a VERY long time ago, so my memory as a kid might be hazy.  I think that they probably never got into the pitlike place, but stayed far away enough so that animal wouldn't charge after them.

Another FYI, alligators are fast runners.    If an alligator were to come close to you like you wanted it to be, you would be dead.

If you want to take a picture of one, just observe from the safety of a bridge or something.  Don't come close to one - ever.
